breakfast for dinner, tacos, well-made burgers, fresh salads

My child has to eat Gluten Free and there are few options. GF turkey sandwich, chicken fingers, occasionally hamburgers and pizza. Why not have tacos, GF pasta (marinara, oil/garlic/cheese, meet balls and past etc.). More variety would be good.

Favorite lunch to eat is ravioli
Hot dogs chicken ziti and broccoli
My child liked almost every lunch last year (b good burgers, the friday pizza option, pasta, mexican, etc) and hates literally every meal that is now served other than the bagel and the pb&j. It seems crazy that you replaced normal cheese pizza with mushroom pizza -why? What 3rd grader wants to eat mushroom pizza and there are no other options!!

Pizza and everything else other than stated above. Food is always over cooked
Pretty much every meal has been a disappointment this year - bad quality, weird ingredients, and doesn't even seem as healthy as last year and this was supposed to be the healthy year

PARENTS: What would you suggest to improve? FOR: Amos A. Lawrence School
What would you suggest to improve?
Portions: If a child is forgoing on option, but wants more of another, then the option to should be there for them. The point is that they eat enough healthy food to grow. If everything in the line is healthy, then don't in a sense penalize them for not being interested in a certain food by not allowing them to get enough to eat from another. Developmentally, they won't want to try some options at a certain point, but as friends recommend and they grow, that will change if there is a healthy culture about eating. In the meantime, feed the children!
Healthier food
Have more fun with menu and special menus for holidays or cultural events. More GF options would be very nice.
More fresh fruit.
During of lunch time.
Sometimes the meal is not enough for a high degree student
More nutritious options more variety
Only serve freshly prepared cooked meals that do not come pre packaged and have little to no processing.ex real eggs scrambled, pancakes cooked on the grill with real batter, offer WHOLE milk, low fat and skim milk contains extremely high levels of sugar, also stop serving left over breakfast and labeling it as "fun lunches". Eliminate all microwaved foods from the menu. microwaving food is EXTREMELY unhealthy and contains high levels of radiation in the body.
Healthier and more nutritious meals (include fish in menu and vegetable soop). Include parents at each school, with their cultural/ gastronomic backgrounds, in the conception of menus.
Seasonal vegetables and fruits served; Farm to table (local) partnerships whenever possible
Please, more healthy food, fewer carbohydrates, much more vegetables.
Healthier options like fresh salads, beans, more fruit.
Brookline should reformulate completely the meals and cafeteria environments at schools. This is part of the educational approach to kids. We need to serve real, tasty and fresh food to our kids. We need to teach them how to use table as a social environment. We should not use disposable items. We need to teach the kids to re-se things and utensils instead of simply trowing everything everyday in the trash. The menus are not good. There is actually no real cooking in the cafeterias. If you want to serve good food, you need to cook!! Not serve pre-maid things that are easy to assemble! My kids tried to eat the lunches many times. Nowadays, they refuse to. So I have been preparing the meals every single day. And they say that there was no improvement this year, the food is still not good. This issue was a schock to us when we arrived here at US. We come from a poor country but food at school was superb! My girls always talk about this. And teachers would take this as part of the educational program! There as so many options of good and healthy food!
More fresh fruits and vegetables and use local merchants
Not over cook the food and make sure food is kept hot. My son prefers to bring his own lunch because food is cold and overlooked

the choices are not healthy. A nacho bar, bacon pizza, pulled pork (PS, this is community with a large population that does not eat pork for religious reasons), a slaw dog? This is like food I was served in the seventies and that is not a good thing. I am extremely disappointed with the menu. Yesterday my daughter got a bagel because that was the only thing that looked good. There are very few vegetarian options, almost nothing that is healthy and things that are downright laughable. Why are we serving these things to our kids?
Sometimes the staff is so busy, there is no one available to ask a question. More ketchup, mustard or barbeque sauces etc. Sometimes other kids drop or spill a plate & there isnt a janitor to clean it up & the lady at register is too busy with a line to get the attention of a janitor or manager etc. Offer healthier choices besides beef nachos with cheese & sour cream. Salad bar is very nice but too small & gets crowded. Deli is good but need more help since the line is too long. If there is 9 kids in front of me & it takes 2 min for each one to be waited on then thats nearly 20 min of my lunch thats gone if I wait for a sandwich to be made. No good whatsoever. Lines stink. Probably need more staff to get better service. The lunch ladies are all nice but stressed. Thank you.
The 2 biggest issues are the quality—especially of the meats, and the portion sizes which are too small for a high schooler. The same holds true at the elementary schools-6th to 8th graders should get bigger portions than 1st graders
Very difficult with long lines, sometimes my kids miss lunch due to wait. Likely not the fault of the staff but simply the huge numbers being served.
I have no visibility into school lunch choices. Do a blog? Video? Otherwise I have no opinion (and my kids don't comment either way).
Higher quality pizza and bread products. More information about the schedule and menu (e.g. when there will be a pasta bar)
the current pizza is "unacceptable" according to my child --- last year's style (before Whitsons took over) was preferred. My child used to buy lunch daily (last year); this year my child has bought lunch 3 times in 3 months because the quality (taste) has gone down
Healthier food. Less junk food. Faster for kids to get it.
More ethnic food choices, such as Chipotle.
Variety. Add back pasta daily- kids that work out after school need it.

At school? the pizza - but they don't even like it that much

Pizza
It used to be pizza, but this has changed this year. She usually wants to bring in a lunch on pizza days now.
Pizza and cheese burger
Chicken with the noodles
gnocci with spinach
The bagel
Mac and cheese
Sushi
Kids generally like simple foods like pizza or pasta, but they've been complaining that the pizza at school is too hard/dry/thin, and the pasta is too soggy. It would be good to serve them foods like bean burritos and veggie burgers, those are easy to eat, feel kind of like fast food but are nutritious.
Vegetarian
pizza and bagels
chicken pasta Alfredo, burgers, nachos, tacos
Chicken with rice
Mac and cheese.
Sushi
Hot dogs or breakfast for lunch

PARENTS: What is your child/ren least favorite lunch choices? FOR: Edith C. Baker School
What is your child/ren least favorite lunch choices?
1) Pizza - only this year. They claim that its quality is very bad. 2) Any meal that combines meat with dairy
Anything in small quantities
my daughter would order lunch at school 2-3 times a week last year. Now we take lunch to school every day. My daughter and I would look at the menu every Monday to see what she would like to order for lunch. The answer would be nothing. I would have to agree with her because when i read the menu too nothing appeal to me either. besides that she even says the pizza is disgusting. How can you screw up Pizza?
meat mixed with cheese
curry, Asian food, overly spicy tacos etc
they don't want any of it
meats
Offerings at the cafeteria often do not match the ones on the menu. Items are not available. Ofter there are no choices without meat and dairy products together. No way to exclude from the meal.
pizza
Spaghetti
sandwiches
Pizza
hotdog
They don’t share a lot of variety in the fruits and vegetables that are provided
Pizza
Meat
Anything with pork or bacon, pastrami etc (too fat, unhealthy and not enjoyable, also not good for some cultures)
Baked potato
I'm not sure.
They don't order on the days that they think they may not like it so it's hard to say when they haven't actually tried it.
cooked vegetables
School Burgers ( he ordinarily loves eating burgers) -- On several occasions-he has complained that the Patty is like rubber iPhone and on one occasion it was undercooked.
Doesn't like the cheeseburger they serve.
Salad
taco; stuffed bread sticks
Everything :-(
Dumplings
Nachos (and nachos are a favorite of his at home!). First of all nachos are a snack, not a complete meal. The cheese served is fake, liquid and disgusting.
burgers (like B Good before), vegetrarian, cafeteria pizza
Pizza
Burger. She thought the meat was not good quality.

PARENTS: What would you suggest to improve? FOR: Edith C. Baker School
What would you suggest to improve?
Real need for variety and volume for money. My sons are 12 and 9 and need to bring lunch to supplement the school lunch
more things to chose. We liked when you had Be Good Burgers and Gil's pizza.
My children have refused to buy lunch this year. They don't even like the pizza which is strange. I would love it if you would add more plain sandwiches, not overly spiced me
more diverse choices, less pizzas and burgers like. more vegetables
there is nothing nutritional about processed foods. Meat is not healthy, diary is not healthy. If you truly care, please educate yourselves and start serving REAL FOOD.
more asian flavors
No
Exposing students to more fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. Being more festive and having fun with specials.
Please make the menus very easy to find online, without going thru many screens on the Brookline public school system. Also please try to avoid ham/pork/bacon, and other fat and unhealthy meats. Try to offer more veggie options, and in general- nutritious food that the kids would enjoy eating, and would also learn healthy eating habits. Thank you !
Online connection with parents
The meals seem to have gotten smaller. Last year, my kids were allowed the entree, fruit, milk and a dessert. This year, they tell me that they are not allowed a dessert and the fruit is not good. There should be a direct link to the monthly menu.
I would suggest introducing whole fat milk products back into the schools. Whole fat foods that have not been shown to contribute to obesity-and low-fat foods are far less palatable to kids.
Increasing the size of serving for boys or provide different size choices. My son is always feeling hungry with one serving and has to buy the second serving all the time, which initially I thought that is because he is tall. However I found buying a second serving is general for many boys around.
Focus groups with kids to find out what they will eat. Too often, I hear they just throw out the “healthy” foods in the cafe.
By far my main concern is that you should not have a day when only vegetarian options are offered. My child needs protein and is not overweight at all so he needs more than vegetarian options .

Taste test days for menu items where students vote on new menu items and even menu items that are already on the menu. Weighing food waste would give much needed data on what isn’t working. Have schoolyard gardens that student help tend. Also have salad bars where they can choose their ingredients.

What would you suggest to improve?
I am a parents and don't eat the food at school. My kids have complained about some items being too small or not as described, e.g., French toast sticks that are just bread.
Fresh food , vegetarian options
Remove sugar cereals!!
Everything. It cannot be this hard to provide simple delicious meals instead of fried junk.
Healthier choices and better variety, no more junk
The menu does not appear to be allergy friendly (beyond nut allergy). Would like to see verity and substitutions for food allergic kids
Add whole milk option. Some kids are underweight/under sized and need the extra calories
less carbs, less sugar, eliminate all desserts
CAN YOU ADD A SIMPLE JELLY SANDWICH TO THE MENU AND SERVE JELLY WITH THE BAGEL.
More vegetarian options based on a healthy vegetarian diet (not just meals with meat removed). Focus on plant-based meals, heavy with fruits and vegetables. Pizza doesn't need to be served every Friday. Notes: - On the previous page I rated everything three stars (neutral) as the survey wouldn't let me proceed leaving it blank or partially blank - I appreciate your asking for feedback via this survey
I know you guys have some challenges with the size of the facility, not to mention the kids being kind of jerks, since that's what they do at this age. Thanks for all your hard work.
My daughter still hungry after lunch. The meals too small.
Fresh fruit and vegetable choices, making sure that children only take what they will eat so there is less waste.
More healthy tasty vegetables! Healthy chicken soups w veggies, rice and chicken soups
To be a little faster
More options that kids will eat. More choices each day beyond the hot entree.
Note: I voted low on the previous page because I am a parent and don't eat there so I don't know. There should be an option for n/a.
More vegetarian/pescaterian options.
the quality of the food
While I appreciate serving multiple options to children, and that those options need to be satisfying to kids, there should be no option to eat a meal that is not nutritious. The reason my kids don't eat more meals served by the school is that they will choose meals that are processed and/or purchase juice or bagels or other additions that have been proven to be unhealthy. These are foods we try to moderate, and yet when my kid goes to school and can select a meal that is so high in sugar and so low in vitamins, protein and other nutrition.... what are we doing?????
This survey is flawed. The previous page said "If you eat school meals", answer the questions. I am a parent and do not eat school meals. But the survey would not let me continue without answering the questions. I understand the challenge of serving meals in a temporary location like lower devotion, but too often the meals at lower devotion come with packaged processed fruit, or sweets with little nutritional value like pudding that most of us would serve only as a special treat, not part of a standard lunch for elementary school children. Please offer more fresh fruit instead. On the menu, it would help if you could indicate what sides will accompany the main on that day. That way I could avoid purchasing lunch for my child on days when sides like pudding will be included.
More vegetarian options
The switch has been a disaster and my daughter is no longer buying school lunch anymore. In fact, her doctor referred her to a nutritionist because she lost weight this year. My daughter is a vegetarian and other than pizza, you have offered ZERO hot vegetarian meals at her school. After three months of only garden salad and bagels, she needed more protein and nutrients. You've lost my business and I now tell other parents to stop buying school lunch. I can't being to tell you how frustrated we are with you chose of this vendor. It's a true shame as the previous food service was fabulous. I hope this contract is canceled soon.

What is your child/ren least favorite lunch choices?
i have two kids and they have been eating hamburgers every mon and thursday but today they announced they don't like them as much as they did last year and that they taste "stale" and don't want to eat them anymore. they also used to love the pizza on fridays but this year announced "the pizza is not good anymore."
Tacos
pasta (sometimes too hard, sometimes too mushy) (2 kids), dumplings (1 kid). 2 of 3 kids don't find anything they like many days a week. Kids don't like the bagels or PB&J, and by the time they get there the other sandwiches are usually gone.
Pizza (preferred previous vendor)
mac and cheese should be traditional, with white pasta, at least students will eat it, pizza is very dry and not tasty
Bagels
They don’t get enough vegetarian meal choices and don’t like the choices they do have
Chicken and cheese quesadilla

What would you suggest to improve?
better hamburgers and pizza. and please offer breakfast for lunch at least once a month or more.
don't force healthy food too much. just make traditional food as pizza and mac and cheese SIMPLY TASTY!!!
More good quality vegetarian options every day. Eg grilled cheese, pasta, Mac and cheese, veggie pizza, smoothies and milk shakes, grain bowls. More allergen free options (nut free) or customizable options
My children have both complained of spoiled or rotten food or milk or food with hair in it.
fresh food and good quality of food for kids!
offer gluten-free options such as plain baked potatoes with butter and/or real cheese or gluten-free nachos (corn chips with beans or gluten-free taco meat, cheese, salsa)
Remove "apple juice" from your menus; that kind of artificially flavored sugary water should not be given to kids. I do not know what is going on this year with kids meals, but I have never heard my children complain so much about school lunches. Meal size is really small. They do not like the food this year, unlike in previous years. So t means it's you.
Listen to kids opinions of food
please inform the parents and students on time about when the new menu will start. Please try to maintain ther good amount of variety for all students.
Larger portions, pizza option with just cheese, ask the kids what they'd like, don't try for low fat (instead think healthy fats) - more satisfying with less sugar :-)
Quality of the lunch offerings offering sufficient protein -- there is too much focus on caloric intake and not enough on sufficient nutrition.

PARENTS: What is your child/ren favorite lunch to eat? FOR: John D. Runkle School
What is your child/ren favorite lunch to eat?
Burger
Sadly, hot dogs
My kids haven't liked any of the Whitson's lunches to date. They used to reliably eat 2 or 3 school lunches per week (in previous years), but after trying the Whitson's lunches for a few weeks (with high hopes), they now have no interest in any of it. Old favorites were: pizza, b-good burgers, meatball subs, breakfast for lunch
chicken
pizza
Breakfast foods for lunch, pasta, fruits, pizza, lean hamburgers
The survey is messed up - my first answers are based on IMPORTANCE not SATISFACTORY OR NOT. so "students are served nutritious meals at school" - answer in the first column - very IMPORTANT; answer in the second column "dissatisfied"...and so on. Favorite lunch USED to be b. Good burgers that happened once a month. HIGH quality meat with NO additives like it is now. I will not allow my kids to eat the burgers now due to additives and TVP (soy protein added to burger meat - horrendous).
None
Salad and chicken
Pancakes
My daughter loved the lunches at school last year but this year she only tried them a handful of times and said everything is terrible. She loved B-Good Burgers, Hot Dogs and all of the pasta dishes last year. She doesn't like anything this year.
chicken
They used to love the pizza on Fridays until this year. Whatever change was made this year, they hate it and no longer will buy lunch on Fridays. The same thing happened with the bagels. My daughter loved the bagels last year and would buy lunch almost every day to get the bagel. Now, she refuses to buy lunch. They also used to buy on pasta days and no longer do so. We are extremely disappointed in the changes this year.
Chicken
I'll tell you what they like, not from what you offer. Unfortunately, they have stopped eating in the cafeteria few weeks ago. Both girls love (1) sushi very much, (2) breadcrumbed tilapia, (3) veggies (tomatoes/cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, brocolli etc.) with dip/sauce, (4) avocado, (5) pickles, (6) burger with salad/fries with ketchop, (7) pizza, (8) pancakes/waffle, (9) smoked salmon with bagel and cream cheese, (10) warm sides (mashed potatoes, pasta with various sauces including gorgonzola, quinoi, rice/fried asian style rice), (11) ALL fruits, (12) bioledd eggs with sour cream, (13) ravioli . In addition- my 5th grader like various meats (chicken, beef, lamb) and fish (baked salmon) etc. Please, contact me if you will be interested to invite my kids for sampling to further investigate how to best accommodate the kids' needs (sophie.shnaper@gmail.com). Currently, both girls virtually stopped eating at the Runkle Cafeteria after years of having lunches there every day. I pack for both girls huge amount of food every morning freshly prepared at home: cut apples, pealed clementines, bananas, cereals bars, boiled eggs, dry fruits, sandwiches with cheese OR smoked salmon OR meat, veggies (cucumber, tomatoes cherries, small carrots etc.). I hope this info is help and will be quickly applied to reverse the current trend of not eating at the Runkle cafeteria. Keep me please, posted.

simple, healthy, nutritious, no added chemicals, soy protein, etc. We eat healthy at home and expect the same at school, so my kids enjoy healthy meals at school. This year, there haven't been many, so we haven't been able to participate in the program very much.

I guess my kids do not yet appreciate the very sophisticated cuisine - this is true at home and at a restaurant (on occasions). I can easily imagine that without us (parents) who are there to convince them to try, they simply won't eat, unfortunately. This is exactly what happens, I guess. The reality is that after years whereby my girls were eating at school I need now to prepare lunches every day because they simply, for some reason, don't like anything that is served at school for lunch. Interestingly, my older one (5th grade) actually often tries various options of food, but there is something with the new lunches at school that she does not appreciate. Please, contact me if you will be interested to invite my kids for sampling to further investigate how to best accommodate the kids' needs (sophie.shnaper@gmail.com).

They won’t buy the exotic meals, they end up buying a bagel
There are many that they won't eat as they do not taste good. For example, they won't eat the pizza which to me is a surprise as they eat pizza at home. The chicken they say tastes rubbery and won't eat chicken based meals any more.

PARENTS: What would you suggest to improve? FOR: John D. Runkle School
What would you suggest to improve?
Kids have 20 minutes to cram food. There are daily long lines that take 10 minutes, esp in higher grades. Provide ample high quality food that kids can eat quickly and have it available, even items with shelf life. My daughter finds the yogurt or packed salads nearly always sold out or service staff have to fetch it which holds up the line.
Veggies and fruits offered every day. More variety on fridays.
Partner with local farmers to bring in fresh produce such as Allendale
Go back to the old food service company.
improve quality of food and perceived healthiness/freshness
provide more food that the kids like and will eat!!
Please stop offering refined processed foods like bagels and pizza and white bread
Less processed foods. More nutritious and good-tasing.
More vegetarian options
Do not serve processed food
love that there are fresh healthy choices, but can we keep pizza, well pizza? they can always have a fruit and veg with it.
speed- not sure if this is a school issue or a whitson's issue;
Please don't serve suboptimal meals to our kids. Make sure portions are aligned with growing teenagers
My kids are always complaining that the lunch provided is not enough and the portions are too small. That includes my 4 th daughter
I'd remove pizza every Friday, it seems like a lot but I haven't seen it to know if it's super fresh vs oily/processed. My son loves it and it helps to not have to pack a lunch, but I'd much prefer it wasn't offered 4x a month; kids get so much pizza out of school at events etc it that it just seems unnecessary to provide it regularly. Don't know quality of cheeses etc to know if it's an ok choice for my child, truly. It would be helpful to show parents what the meal choices look like or what the cafeteria looks like on a day to day basis. I'd suggest more variety to the daily bagel option.

this year all he will eat is a bagel. but he doesn't like the bagels this year as much as last year. he will also eat hot dogs and hamburgers when those are served. he used to love the pizza but this year says they have too much cheese on them, plus - serving kids pizza with mushrooms and spinach is pointless. he won't eat those pizzas, you're better off just giving basic cheese and pepperoni. but again - this year he complains they have too much cheese.

Spicy food, food not cooked from scratch, fried food
My children dislike all the lunch choices that they ate since the beginning of the school. These include pizza, chicken parmesan, pasta and meatballs..... overall the food seems over-processed and totally tasteless or too sweet.
School lunch provided by Whitsons
Unfortunately, pizza - this used to be something we all looked forward to on Fridays, and now they refuse to it.
They only buy two days a week, so I'm not sure. They pick their two favorite meals to buy.

Mac n cheese/cheesy nachos with beans
Do not eat beef so hot dogs with beef, turkey with gravy. Not always clear on menu what meat it is (e.g. meatballs, dumplings, sausages, etc.).
sandwiches
I don't recall, but I do know my kid eats a bagel on those days, and I don't consider this a balanced meal.
In general - we have found there to be way too much cheese in everything. my son doesn't love cheese - it's not even healthy to offer that much cheese. is it possible to do the burrito - without the cheese, the salads, without the cheese, etc. he would eat a lot more. if you look at your menu, almost everyday the main dish has cheese in it. there are a lot of kids with very simple palates, so maybe offer something for them too. and maybe find out what bagels they used to serve because it sounds like this year they're not that good. thank you. i appreciate you being open to our feedback.
Too much veggies as main entree.

PARENTS: What would you suggest to improve? FOR: Michael Driscoll School
What would you suggest to improve?
More salads (my son reports cafeteria is frequently out of salad by the time he buys lunch)
There is not enough time for kids who buy. Whitson's should look into ways to speed service.
bring back b.good burgers
More meatless/vegetarian/vegan options
Quality of food is much worse than last year, both in terms of taste and in terms of nutritional value. We are very disappointed that Whitson's has taken over Brookline's food service. Quality is completely sub-par.
Time it takes for kids to get through the line. A school issues though. I had to guess on a few answers. I've never seen any lunches and my kids are picky.
I would like to see the occasional treat offered. They used to offer pudding or jello on Fridays, or a thanksgiving or halloween cookie. Occasional treats are fine!
Nothing It’s great and I love seeing my child so happy!
chocolate milk once a week, more vegetarian choices
More fruits and vegetables Fresher food Less pastas/carbs
More option and more simple ones for younger kids
Making sure there is enough of all menu selections for the classes eating later in the day - some items have not been available to my daughter because the cafeteria ran out
My children report that frequently the advertised choices on the published menu are not available and they also report not being able to receive/find vegetarian options. Therefore I suggest adhering to the published menu and making available vegetarian options at all lunches. My children also report that the pizza served by Whitsons at Brookline Driscoll school is bad and that they no longer want to eat the pizza which is surprising since my children rarely refuse a chance to eat pizza. Therefore I suggest improving the pizza since it's served weekly.
Add organic and locally sourced food
Less fast food, fresh salads, less sodium, more sandwich or wrap options, larger bagels, no chips
My son only choice is the bagel with cream cheese. The day special should be more atractivo and nutritional at the same time. I’m Mexican and tostadas or paella is not attractive for kids. You can make more easy choices that are still nutritious, like more often offer pasta, chicken tenders or nuggets .This week pasta and hot dogs was great. It should be nice to have at least 2 or 3 of these easy choices a week. For my 5 year old son it’s difficult to order a sandwich
More flexibility when it comes to cheese or no cheese on dishes, and more non-cheese options like dumplings, veggie sushi and ramen noodles with cabbage. Many Asian families at our school and in Brookline not into the heavy cheese.
More flexibility for students to choose a second helping of 1 or 2 items. Growing boys! Mechanism for receiving immediate student feedback on meals. My kids have had strong opinions about some of the meals, but aren't going to be able to recall specifics many meals later.
I don't see or eat the lunches and your questionnaire didn't allow for me to say that, so my answers there are invalid. However, I assume they are typical school lunches, and thus average in quality. I don't approve of juice, sugary yogurts, or a bagel as a meal substitute. Kids should have only balanced, nutritious, non-sugary meals to choose from. They like vegetables with dips, which I think you offer, and veggies cut in odd shapes (not always possible, I know.)
Too many veggies in meals
The food quality and range of choices. Please offer more vegetables - my 11-year old boy is asking for this! My 13-year old son says you should ask parents for recipes.
Food quality
You need to visit the site to understand the issue. Our assessment is already in this survey.
More real food, less industrial food
increase the variety of the menu from different culture background
Simplify the offerings. Eat/taste the food yourself. Offer for the parents to eat the foods. Deconstruct the offerings instead of having all prepared in advance. Have ability to have plain pasta and add what they want instead of pasta with red sauce, broccoli and cheese (example of simplified).
My son reports that the staff could be kinder.
More vegetarian options, salad bar at the elementary school level, partnering with school gardens to use vegetables and herbs grown on school grounds,

They have been willing to try only pizza, some of the pasta, the hot dogs and the chicken tenders. Menu choices the kids will eat
Provide appealing options that are ready when students arrive in the cafeteria. Currently the line is too long for food that students do not want to eat. In previous years my child would eat (at least) the pizza but now he says even that is not worth eating. [Also, the format of this survey needs reconsideration - it does not follow standard methodology.]
My kids say the food choices don’t match the menu so I’ve loat confidence in the menu so don’t send my pickier kid without a home-packed lunch. Can you make sure the monthly menu is accurate?
more vegetarian choices and more variety
My daughter is vegetarian and we are disappointed in the amount of vegetarian selections.
the quality of the food is terrible. I will be contacting the School Committee to urge them to make a significant change for next year.
Extend the dining area or add more tables in Pierce school, Brookline, MA, so that more students can have lunch at the same time and get more time to finish their lunch. Sometimes, they only get 5-10 minutes to finish their lunch which is obviously not enough.
School lunches at Pierce have been declined for several years. Our son started in 2006, and now our daughter. This year our daughter is less and less likely to eat the food, she doesn't even like the pizza any more. She doesn't like some of the breakfast choices because of the quality of the bread. Not everything has to be whole wheat or gluten free nonsense. The pizza used to be good, now she won't even tough it. I've tried several of the breakfast items with her and they are bland - even the rice krispies are brown rice versions which are gross! Why is chocolate milk not offered free anymore? She was told they no longer have it. I don't understand why these so called 'wealthy' towns like Brookline feed food to the kids like this. People want everything to be natural, and the kids hate it. My daughter isn't the only one, at least 10-20 of her classmates over the years have expressed how they are buying lunch much much. What is worse for nutrition, a kid having some white bread on their sandwich, or not eating at all?
The level of nutrition provided in a meal. Some staffs behavior. To open up the salad bar again. To have options for people who are gluten free, lactose intolerant.
Apparently on Fridays when they have pizza, I’m told that the pizza runs out early and then a group of kids is left waiting for five minutes to get more pizza prepared. This is tough for little kids that are slow eaters especially because they have so little time to eat lunch to begin with.
My child finds that fresh vegetables are less readily available than in the previous years. Food is prepared in ways that can be healthier. For example, pasta is served with creamy sauce instead of simple tomato sauce. One morning, I arrived at the cafeteria with my child to order breakfast. The only options were fried bread and bagel with cream cheese. Even though the flyer stated that fresh fruits were included, they were not. Instead, a juice box was offered. As a result, my child has not purchased breakfast again. While I do not know whether this represents a typical day, fried bread does not appear to be consistent with the philosophy of providing healthy and nutritious food for young children, and when the only other option is bagel, it raises concern about the impact of food services on student health.
lines are way too long. Students end up spending their entire lunch time waiting in line, thus getting no time to actually eat their lunch. As a result they go hungry for the rest of the day.
The quality and preparation of the food is poor. My children will not even eat the pizza anymore because it's so unappetizing. The milk is always sour or bad tasting. My kids are not picky eaters and they will no longer eat the food in the cafeteria because of these issues. In addition, the lunch lines are too long and there is not enough time to eat. The staff is unkind if a child has a question or problem. There needs to be more appetizing food, prepared in an authentic and simple way, and staff that are helpful and responsive to the children.
Food needs to be presented in an appealing manner.

STUDENTS: If you only bring food from home, why? FOR: Pierce School
If you only bring food from home, why?
Most days I bring in food from home because the school lunch is gross; the bagels taste like dough, the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are frozen and the pizza has gross cheese (sometimesmin the crust). The rest of the food I never know if it's going to be good or not before hand because the menu makes it all sound good.
Do not like the food offerings at school.
Because i like the food cooked by my mother.
I like it better
I usually bring in food from home because I am lactose intolerant and most of the food in the cafeteria has too much dairy.

What would you suggest to improve?
The food was much fresher and healthier last year. Would it be possible to re introduce items like kale chips? Greater variety.
They used to get burgers and pizza from outside vendors once a week. My daughter looked forward to this.
Please continue to offer vegetarian & vegan meals - they are a healthy option for all children. We really appreciate it. Thank you!!
Variety of foods. Peanut free areas and cross contamination. Variety of drinks as well
SIMPLIFY! It's fine to have a restaurant quality menu, but have some more kid friendly options each week. Bring back the basic pizzas (cheese, pepperoni) on Fridays.
Have enough for seconds.
My son says he couldn't get seconds, but he wants to be able to.
You should get granular in surveying the kids as to what they like and don't like.
I would encourage a variety of foods, including a diversity of ethnic foods.
