Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
Use healthy, natural ingredients. Don’t use fillers
Many of the options for October have been too fancy/elaborate for my first grader. He is looking for a more basic menu - regular pasta, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, pizza more often
Improve quality of food especially healthier option - and ensure healthier options don’t run out. Dont serve spoiled milk.
It's all about balance.
Improve the quality of the food. Maybe bring in a local chef to oversee the program
Food should be prepared on the premise as much as possible and not catered from these heavily advertised corporations that all they care is to make money
My son has said since the new meal program has gone into place the quality of food has gone down
Better taste and more selections. More portions for certain food eg nuggets.
More vegetables and proteins, less carbs and sauces
Better food and more diverse. Look into other countries gastronomy for inspiration.

I think it’s fine to keep meals and sides simple but cooking on the premises would make an enormous difference in both taste and quality. The food right now is probably discarded in large amounts by the students. Potatoes taste sandy, carrots are cooked but unpeeled. Entrees contain odd mixtures and taste bland. The pizza has large chunks of onions with soggy crust. The turkey and gravy is so salty it is uncomfortable to eat. If the food is organic and natural it would be great to see more signage about its origins. Please consider cooking again on the premises. The pasta, chicken , and everything was so much fresher and tastier. Thanks.

Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
More variety for picky eaters
improve quality of salad bars, more quality level sandwiches
More meals with vegetables, such as stir fry with chicken or steak, burritos
I have students at bhs and ccs according to them and other students the food is the worst its ever been
My daughter stopped eating at the cafeteria because she does not like the food choices. While healthy food is important, it is also important to serve food that appeals to teens at the high school. I would prefer she eat at the cafeteria because she often ends up eating at Dunkin Doughnuts because she does not like the taste of the food. She would like some choices with more pizza, pasta or sandwiches.
The food is just bad- not fresh, unappealing, there isn’t enough. My kids used to just daily and have stopped toninfe a week and then they Kait buy bagels, which are overpriced. It is inexcusable.
The old vendor used locally sourced ingredients and food was fresh and healthy. The new food is poor quality.
The food needs to have great flavor and texture. My son say the food is so bad that he and his friends don’t eat it. He sometimes will go without because it’s better than the taste of the food. There is one section of food he would like to eat, I think it’s the deli, but the line is so long that it takes the whole lunch time to just get the food.
Provide better food--what is served now is terrible. It's also way to crowded at lunch and most options are gone by the third lunch.
in the last few years the quality of the fresh foods has gone down (even the "fresh" fruit doesn't taste good). Kids are forced to pick options of foods to satisfy requirements, like including a fruit and then throw it out because it tastes bad which is extremely wasteful.
More fruits and vegetables
provide good quality foods
Kids need to eat at school and ideally the food is healthy but that our job not the school. Just make sure there are options to eat and short lines for them to buy it
I know that we are practicing good nutrition levels, though I think that a little more variety should be offered. Mix it up a bit.
Use the food service we used to have
The quality of the food has gone way down. Most days my kids come home extremely hungry. My suggestion is to make simple, fresh foods. Create a menu based on highly rated recipes. It's not hard to make rice bowls, for example. Decent rice with some items to add in and can be custom tailored to food allergies, etc. Go to Sweetgreen and see how they do it. Brookline High used to have really food - sushi and other items that were tasty and fast.
My student says the food tastes bad- they eat bagels or packaged snacks
Bring back sushi!
Having fresh, wholesome, high quality meal prepared from organic, non-gmo and locally sourced ingredients if the kids don’t eat it! The parents aren’t there to force them. Making something they’ll eat and order on their own a little healthier is better than the “Rooted” crap you list. If you take all unhealthy stuff out of the cafeteria the kids will eat off campus.
Fresh ingredients and tasty food are urgently needed. Right now my child complains the food is low quality and disgusting, and often eats only the french fries. Also the lines are too long for deli, so not enough time to select that option.
My son says, "this is not good food that they are giving us. Any days when I have the time, I go out. some days, I walk in and just can't deal, and go to the library...I don't eat every day."
Fresher foods. Ensuring food is available for all students within all lunch times. Having more lines to endure each child has an opportunity to eat.
More variety of healthy choices and sandwiches
Healthful meals of appropriate quantity and not running out of food should be top priority.
shorter line for sandwich bar
Make the food taste better.
the pizza replacement has been awful. the kids hate it now.

Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
Include more healthy options with protein. For example, bagel lunch is carbs/lots of dairy. Add something to make it more balanced
clearly label good with allergens
Most of the hot lunches are not appealing to kids, including mine. There do not seem to be known or available alternatives if they don’t like the main meal. Fruit is in cups, not fresh, and the vegetable offerings are equally unappetizing. There doesn’t appear to be any attempt to emphasize healthy, seasonal, sustainable meal choices. Overall, the quality and choices seem very institutional, not fresh, and marginally healthy.
Please include more fresh fruits. Please include more than 2 food groups in meals. Often the meal is mainly starch and dairy, including side items.
It better to increase the quantity so that the students can be filled.
first grade eats lunch at 10:30. when they get out of school, they are very hungry. push lunch time back.
make lunch a quite moment to be able to eat and digest. if no time to eat, there is almost no point serving fresh and nutrients. there is so much talk about obesity in this country but rushing trough lunch is NOT going to set kids with a good habit
Cc school has run out of lunch a few times so far this year
better quality food and taste needed. School has also run out of lunch entrees.
I'd suggest using fresh, locally sourced nutritional food... while I know it's the Whitson motto it is simply not the experience anyone has.
more diverse offerings each day. Every meal should have protein- No Bagels For Lunch (that is NOT nutritious option). Hot Vegetarian options each day. Soups each day with an accompanying protein.
Make it better tasting, according to my child.
Please, introduce some fish: fish burgers or fish sticks would be great! Offer tuna salad with the bagel, not only cream cheese.
Food apparently does not look good, taste good, is not presented in an appealing way. More choices requested
Food that’s well seasoned with good flavor. Soups, salads, burritos
Improve the food. Period. It is terrible!
Less sugar, hot cereal, lots of protein
Yes change everything: quality of products, they way you prepare and serve the meal, change the menu- it's horrible. Increase the quantity of food. Children need to eat.
The students could have more time to eat and improved quality and freshness of the food would help.
Healthy breakfast more fruits and grains
Offering vegetarian options besides salads would help those with diet restrictions be able to eat in school. The staff in the cafeteria was better able to provide meals enjoyed by students when they had more flexibility in the past.
ingredients of all food served should be available alongside the menu. I care about whether food is local, is it mass produced, fresh? high quality? etc
Spend more money on lunch. There is no way a good lunch could cost 2.70 nowdays. Cooking at school, less prossessed food would be wonderful
Have heard from kids that meals can be inconsistent, sometimes really good, sometimes soggy, sometimes very small
please try to make lunch serving (hot lunch) faster. By the time they get their pizza they have about 5 minutes left to eat.
Have a grill (burgers, hot dogs) and/or pasta alternative each day. Prepare enough for more popular days (ex pizza day.) Also, according to my kids the school lunches have become “gross” compared to last year. I don’t know if anything has changed? I’m sorry I could not get any detail out of them. They did say the pizza was mostly grease and not enough cheese.
Please increase portion sizes! I have to pack supplemental food every time my kids buy lunch. My 8th grader has to get (and pay for) a second serving. Also they love the breakfast for lunch idea, but often the food is very unappealing - French toast that is just bread and gray sausage.
I am dismayed at the lack of fresh and healthy foods offered by Whitson's. My children do not eat meat and resort almost daily to eating bagels as the "vegetarian option." We read your explanation together of the importance of "Meatless Mondays" and they asked, rightly so: why, if that day is so important, it us not reflected anywhere else in your menu? I see no evidence of your purported values of fresh and organic represented in the meal plan. Why not start off with a healthy, meatless diet and let children add meat back in as sides. To address the obvious question of why they don't bring lunch from home, it is a social issue. They want to be like their friends. That said, they return home ravenous and undernourished at the end of the day. With the last company the school used, my older child became especially fond of kale, which was featured regularly in the salad. This is the behavioral choices you should be seeking to encourage for lifelong healthy eating that is good for the individual and the planet.

Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
Change catering please. My kids practically stopped eating at cafeteria last school year. And all of the sudden became are very vocal about the quality of their meals. Both claim the food quality dramatically dropped in the last year.
More variety
Staff should be polite and respectful to children. Portions should be larger.
My kids are disgusted by the food and the are not picky eaters. They do not even like the pizza and they love pizza. Please improve the quality of preparation, the quality of ingredients, the freshness of the food. E.g. brown lettuce is not something you should be serving.
Please treat students with respect. Allow for slight modifications like no gravy or no cheese. Provide better quality food and bigger portions. Reported that chicken nuggets consisted of 4 small pieces - it is definitely not sufficient for 10-11 year old kids.
The menu and the offerings have to change. So many kids can not be wrong or mistaken and their feedback has to be finally taken seriously
Just make it taste good
Offer more balanced, nutritious, tasty and healthy meals.
Serve better quality food. Not sure what else to suggest, but this is a universal complaint. No one will buy in the cafeteria because the quality and taste is so poor.
You need to talk to the kids. It is becoming a rampant discussion about how awful the food has become since the distract switched to Whitson's
We need a new food service. Many children are refusing to buy lunch because the food is inedible.
Change the food provider
Better quality food.
I would love to see healthier food options available. Everything should be whole wheat and low in sodium and sugar. I understand foods need to be attractive to the children, but things like turkey dogs (while better than hot dogs), meatballs, and breadsticks stuffed with cheese are not healthy options. Nor are very sugary yogurts. I really appreciate all fresh veggies and fruit on the menu. There are certainly good choices, but I don't feel confident that my child will leave school having had a nutritious lunch if they buy it.
Maybe do a voluntary tasting with current offerings and new ideas (after school?) to get student input.
hot lunches should be hot. and perhaps more choice
Yes, see how other countries do it: hot lunches are cooked in school cafeterias and eaten by both students and teachers (ex: Japan)
They shouldn't be forced to take a piece of fresh fruit if they don't want it; it often is not ripe and looks and tastes bad. Fruit is a difficult thing to get just right since ripening and rotting occur very close in time. Bring back the juices, jellos and puddings. They are not unhealthy if eaten in moderation. Kids should not be deprived of those things!
Less processed food
improve the taste
I have heard the food is inedible. I would suggest serving food that is fresh and more whole grain and vegetarian options
Neither Breakfast for lunch, nor grill cheese are healthy options.
The quality of the food has gone down significantly. In addition, if my children do buy, sometimes the entree on the menu is not available, so they might not eat lunch at all.
Make the portion bigger and also make meals more delicious Even on Friday for pizza(kids favorite), my kid doesn't want to eat them any more because of the taste and the small portion.
The food, since transitioning to Whitsons, is unappetizing and my third grader and kindergartener refuse to eat it. Even pizza Friday’s, long beloved, are no longer appealing. Specific examples: grilled cheese too soggy to eat. Why put tomatoes in a sandwich that won’t be served immediately? Of course it’s soggy!
Make allergen-friendly foods available.
Don't use processed food. Use real and healthy food.
The menus should be easily available online, so families can plan ahead, the kids can eat at school on days with good food, and bring lunch from home on days with food they don't like or can't eat. The pasta should be drained so it doesn't get soggy, the pizza should be kept warm but soft, not dry and hard. Please offer more options for healthier protein. Please don't declare that you're providing wholesome, high quality meals, when the reality is quite the opposite. Thank you

Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
No sugar!!!
Easy access to school menu to help make better choices And clearly marked ingredients
The problem is that there are unhealthy choices, which my child will (as will most) opt for over the healthier choices. So, any unhealthy option is not ok to offer.
My son is a very picky eater and he does not eat most of the meals. He eats a plain bagel on most days. He likes the popcorn chicken. He likes pizza in general but not the one served at school which he used to look forward to with the prior food service.
It doesn’t matter if all the lunches are healthy if my daughter says they taste horrible
As a chef and food service operator I find the choices lacking in appearance, freshness, quality, and nutrition. there is a lot of process and frozen meets, there is never enough of the items the kids like, it is extremely disappointing to see what is served. more fresh food and food of quality can be served if there is a trained professional in the kitchen.
Offer a hot vegetarian meal option every day (eg pasta, quesadillas, pizza, grilled cheese/veggies panini, soups, rice pilaf). Not ok to only offer bagels as vegetarian option for lunch. Ensure freshness and quality - sometimes the frozen pizza or bagel is not even thawed properly before being served to the kids.
Wish there was 100% consistency/ reliability between ingredients listed online and those actually offered in the cafeteria. Sometimes oils can vary in preparation, etc. When dealing with food allergies, we need to know every single ingredient every time. To ensure my child can eat food from the cafeteria, I need to go in and speak with the main cafeteria food preparer to double-check.
You will have to ask my kids but they don't enjoy eating at school for lunch the claim the quality of the food is not good. Even the pizza on Friday.
Smoothie of the day
yes, serve what is stated on the monthly menu. Many times my girls have planned to buy hot lunch because of what the menu says and come to find the meal for the day was changed to something else, something they do not eat so they waste 3.50 on a silly bagel they don't enjoy
Yes, hire good chefs for good food to make my child not sick
Hire better chefs for my kiddo and make real food not plastic and rubber.

my mom has time to packs my lunch.
My parents make MUCH better food that the school.
I bring food from home because I do not love the cafeteria food, also if there is food that I do not like, then I do not eat it and I will just take a piece of fruit, and then I will be very hungry because I did not have a full lunch

It taste good and is healthy and better for you.
This is wha I have stated before: I have heard about multiple occurrences of food poisoning from multiple sources, and I found it to be very disturbing that one of the student council announcements to be "Don't worry, the purple spots in the chicken were only caused by tinfoil." If I am going to eat school lunch, I want to eat It knowing that the food is safe.
Because i like my healthy and nutritious food and my food from home actually tastes good.
i think the school lunch is really bad

better quality and more food. my adult-sized 7th grader and kindergartner are fed the same amount
It seems like so much focus has been on serving healthy foods, that my children rarely buy lunch anymore. They say the food is bland and unappealing
A number of the Runkle lunch options this year have not been healthy or appropriate. For example, this week a main course was bread stuffed with cheese. How is that at all nutritious or a lunch that teaches good eating habits? It isn't even a real meal! Another odd one is Breakfast for Lunch, which is offered regularly & has our son wondering who wants this?! French toast & breakfast sausage is not an appropriate or healthy lunch. Nachos, due up soon, are also not a real lunch but a shared appetizer & should just be a treat. Pizza Fridays has always been a hit, but stuffing the crust with cheese is unnecessary & unhealthy (& unpopular with our son). He is an adventurous eater & has purchased lunch since kindergarten. This has been harder this year as he has struggled with a lot of the hot offerings & we find ourselves paying for him to just buy PB&J, yogurt, fruit, etc. I'm glad he has those options at least but it's kind of a waste of money to not just bring those from home. He has been happy with the vegetable sides as well & so thanks for those.
Yes - please provide actual food. Beef without soy protein added (and other additives). Chicken that is just chicken. Less food with added soy/soy oil. Pizza - should be pizza dough without a ton of unpronounceable ingredients, cheese with the ingredients of milk and rennet only, and tomato sauce that's, well, made from tomatoes and herbs/spices. There should be offerings of whole milk. For breakfast, absolutely no fake "maple syrup", anything with high fructose corn syrup, packaged fruit in sweet syrup (fresh fruit only, or canned fruit in their own juices). Fresh eggs - scrambled, hard boiled - should be offered. Let's get with the program and stop feeding our children complete garbage.
More high-quality and fewer processed foods. Period.
There are too many menus that in my view are below minimal standards for what students should be served as part of a well-rounded meal. I'd rather see more real meals or sandwiches and far fewer throw-aways like french toast for lunch, bread sticks stuffed with cheese, grilled cheese, etc. No problems with an occasional grilled cheese, but surely can do better than meals that are just bread and cheese routinely.
make it tasty and healthy
Improve quality and healthiness by 500%. Serve food that kids can actually eat and feel good about, that is GOOD FOR THEIR BODIES. It's insane that in 2018 we have to explain TO THE FOOD SERVICE PROVIDER why hockey puck burgers and fake maple syrup and fruit served in syrup as opposed to in its own juices or as fresh fruit, and why meat made out of anything other than meat is horrible for our kids, horrible for your business, horrible for our health. You don't need to take this survey - you know your food is utter crap.
The food needs to be fresher with fewer cheap fillers. A hamburger should be made of only meat.
More options.
Encourage the kindergarten students to try. Maybe the teachers or older students can show them. My kindergartener didn't buy lunch because he is afraid to try the process.
Less carbohydrates, more meatless options
Please be mindful that these are young kids, many of whom are picky eaters. It's ok to Have healthy options but that should not be the only consideration. If the kids don't eat at all, what's the point if the food being healthy?
Kids should be able to buy individual sides like dinner rolls Can you have option for flavored milk and cinnamon raisin bagels and not just plain bagels. Which kid eats plain bagel??? Can you sometimes have jello or pudding
Should have whole milk available, kids do not need skim milk
My children do not like the choices offered at school. Even things like grilled cheese or pancakes are a hard sell from my part as they say they do not taste good. I don't know why as these should be relatively easy to make even in large quantities. (One thing with the pancakes they have said that the "maple syrup" is artificial and does not taste good.) They hardly ever choose entrees that have meat/chicken, as they say the meet is either chewy or fatty or too dry. Before Whitson's they used to eat the pulled pork, not anymore.
At least for the lower grades, kid-friendly meals already assembled so they can move quickly through the line and to their seats. Lunches are short and buying lunch takes too long.
It's important to recognize the types of food that children tend to like (especially the younger kids) and at least have one or two options of that kinds (e.g. chicken fingers, mac 'n cheese etc) paired with healthy vegetables/fruit.
larger portions of fresh made home style food
Feed them food they will eat. And bigger portions. My daughter is not provided enough food when she buys lunch so I pack her numerous snacks and she is tiny.
There needs to be more variety in the menus and fewer things like nachos or breakfast for lunch instead of more conventional meals. Miss Ruby's burgers are a good alternative but now they are only available on Mondays, not Thursdays as well. And how about an alternative to pizza every Friday?
Better quality
From what my children report, there are too many unhealthy choices available. The problem is that children tend to make unhealthy choices when these are available, even when healthy ones are available as well. The key is to remove all unhealthy foods. For example, there should be no chocolate milk and no bread products made with all-white flour. My son reports that he often has a white bagel for lunch, which is definitely not a wholesome lunch. In addition, when children want seconds on fruits or vegetables their request is denied, even though these are exactly the foods they should be eating more of.
There may be opportunities to make the process of purchasing food more efficient so that the lines are not as long. Train staff to be more sensitive to children with food sensitivities and allergies - they shouldn't be made to feel they are being inconvenient especially if they are politely asking about ingredients. And they definitely should not misinform the children - they may say "I'm sorry but I don't know."
Well, It is really about working very hard to propose food that the kids really like but which is also healthy and attractable to them. I can tell you that my kids love sushi, so if we can for example, develop menu based on this kind of food - for sure, there will be success
My child has told me on many occasions that many of the food offerings are unappetizing.
For the first 7 years of our Runkle experience, my children enjoyed the school lunches. Something happened with Whitsons that made the food less appetizing and after trying the meals a few times my children decided they would rather take the extra time required to make their own lunch at home. Even simple things like a yogurt parfait - which I was hopeful could become reliable lunch option - when my daughter bought one she found that the fruit in the parfait was only grapes. I don't know anyone who wants to eat yogurt with grapes - why would kids? So now she's never going to count on having that for lunch again because it was unappealing that time. She's not going to risk being hungry by hoping that the school lunch will be palatable one day. She gave Whitsons a few tries and at this point I don't think there is anything they could do to convince her to try again unless the whole food service is changed to a new company.
I think they enjoy the experience.
Make food more palletable and appetizing to the audience that being children
More vegetarian options,less processed foods
sometimes the cafeteria runs out of vegetarian options--this is a problem; many foods which she likes (e.g., French toast, grilled cheese, pizza) she does not like at school.

Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
Have food service company and school officials eat the cafeteria food every day. Then bring in parents to revise the food offerings and preparation to a level that is consistent with home-quality food.
There is very, very little that is served that my kids will sign up to eat. I wish there were a healthier vegetarian staple than bagels. They don't like your pizza, so it's even a struggle to get them to buy that (which used to be a favorite).
More variety
Higher quality food- less sugar
less cheese, more fresh vegetables. please serve tacos. my kids love the breakfast for lunch and the steamed dumplings. nachos are not a meal.
Offer more things without cheese. Too much dairy in the food served.
My 2 children, aged 8 (third grade) and 10 (5th grade) have complained about not enjoying numerous lunches at Driscoll and have complained about low quality/poor taste compared to cafeteria offerings prior to Whitsons.
No processed food, only fresh farm to table ingredients. No preservatives, artificial colors, high fructose syrup, and other added sugars. Cook from scratch, please!
Longer time, shorter lines, more choice, and if kids don’t want sauce on their pasta then don’t put it on! Give them what they will eat. Kids don’t like sauces, condiments, etc
I think the school should serve healthier food for the children.
I children and I believe that there is a low variety of food at their school, and it does not provide what a child needs in a meal. I think the school should provide healthier and tastier foods, and school lunch will become something they will look forward to.
Offer good quality food, good presentation
Simplify.
Have enough food available to serve all lunch times. My daughter often is “shut out” of certain choices due to unavailability
perhaps this is inevitable but there seems to be too much junk food. burgers with lots of cheese, heavy mexican food, gravy. whitsons' philosophy does not seem to translate to healthy not very fatty simple meals. I am planning to reduce the number of days per week my child eats cafeteria food to max 2/3.
Cook fresh food on sight.
Have more options on Fridays aside from pizza, as meal. Kid doesn’t like the pizza served and often doesn’t eat much for lunch on that day
the food selections are unhealthy and, according to my kids and their friends, taste terrible. the entire selection and food preperation and infpgrediants need to be revamped. Probably the best solution is to fire Whitsons and get a new food servie
longer time to eat
My kindergartener eats a bagel every day because she is not ready to try new things. If there were some way to prohibit a kid from eating the same thing every day, that would be great. Or offering something with fiber along with the bagel! Also it takes so long for a little kid to eat a big chewy bagel that I doubt she gets enough to eat before leaving the lunchroom. I am not a fan of the bagel, as yummy as they always are.
My son's a vegetarian and I would like to see that choice better supported.
You have to change the vendor. This vendor clearly has significant supply chain, quality control, training, and standards issues. We aren’t going to buy food at the school until there’s a new vendor. I do not believe that Whitsons is honoring their “Simply Rooted” philosophy in practice.

Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
Reports from both of my kids are that food quality has gone down a lot since last year's change. I also think that it is a mistake to take away desserts kids actually want to eat in the interests of nutritional rigor. Kids bringing lunch often have chips or a dessert in their bag, and I think it creates a big disincentive to buying lunch if those kids don't have something similar. I'm aware of the fresh, organic, etc philosophy, but the execution may be lacking. From what my kids tell me the execution has left cafeteria food as something of a joke among their peers.
The portions of Cafeteria lunch are too small for my 8th grader, and there is not enough time to buy and eat lunch. Also, my two kids normally love pizza, but they did not like yours. So it seems quality, amount (and time/service) need to be improved.
When you offer bagels at lunch, the students will default to it - sometimes because it's easy for them, and sometimes because the other food isn't appealing. Bagels are a lazy, ineffective lunch.
Offer small plates, multiple choices.
Serve foods that are fresh, nutritious and look good to kids. Perhaps sandwiches with different filling options? The schools used to serve better foods that my kids were happy to eat.
Just make the food taste better, it's not rocket science. If I can prepare nutritious, fresh meals at home that taste good, you certainly can too.
BETTER FOOD!!! More options, more vegetarian options, tastier options! My daughter says that she and her friends don't even like the pizza, and she LOVES pizza! She now refuses to buy pizza on Friday (my younger son does though, he's less discerning...)
Change the pizza on Fridays. The children think it’s gross.
There has been an ongoing problem with food at school so 2 or our 3 kids now pack their own lunches. Problem with re-purposing food from earlier in the week. Also, packaged foods like French toast in a bag.
Lunch is of extremely poor quality and the food is not healthy. My kids have been served sugar cereals and microwaved french toast (still in a plastic bag) for lunch. Food portions are erratic. The kids tell me that students regularly make fun of how awful the food is.
The quality of the food needs to be more appealing to students.
Obviously, my request and advice would be to get with the times and offer vegan options. I am happy to help with brain storming if needed.
My child always tells me he has a bagel with cream cheese for lunch and I would not want him to chose that! There needs to be a 2-3 options to choose from but I want to be confident that whatever he chooses, it’s a good choice.
no style of food
There has to be more consistency in the meals offered. How are breadsticks a nutritious meal? There must always be a vegetable offered, even if it's just carrot sticks. Too many times I've had my child return home from school hungry because their lunch was insufficient. Once they were served two slices of bread in the guise of French toast. That is not a sufficient lunch for a child over five feet tall. Servings are inconsistent as well. My twins regularly report large differences in the amount of food they are served eventhough they eat at the same time. Organic and non-GMO doesn't matter if all they are being served is toast and breadsticks.
Better quality food
homemade soups and fresh wholewheat breads during winter months.
I haven't tried the food myself, and my child is, admittedly, a picky eater. So other than just saying please try to make it taste better, I've nothing to offer. Sorry; for all I know there are other kids who like the way the food tastes.
Allow longer lunchtime

If you only bring food from home, why?
It is a lot better. The school food is atrocious.
I like the food at my house better than the school's food.
My food is 10 times better than the garbage they serve at the cafeteria
Because I can save the food
Because my food at home is better than our school cafeteria food.
ew
because I have done it for a while
School food has never looked very good and if I bring food from home I don't have to pay for it.
Because it is much more better than eating in pierce
because my mom is at home so she always cook
I like controling what I eat
I like food from home more.
I would love to buy but it costs money and I don't have that much
I like bringing lunch from home.
I can choose what I bring and it tastes better.
I like being able to choose what I am going to eat and i like to to be healthy and appetizing. Food from home follows that and school food doesn't.
I buy lunch
It is more convenient and I like it plus I have the privileged to.
I like the food at my house, it's from wholefoods. The school lunch don't really serve the right amount of food a 7th grader would need. Also, the school lunch isn't filling.
I only bring food from home now because I don't like the food that much and sometimes the line gets long to buy food.
Because I am lucky enough to have food at my house and I am able to bring it in to school.
I like the lunches that I get from home more than the ones at school. In addition, I only eat lunch at school when my parents don't have time to make my lunch.
I don't like the food.
i like it better
I do not bring lunch from home.
Because this way i can customize my lunch and it's much yummier and healthier
It's healthier and way better
I can't eat gluten, so I have to bring my own food.
Because i can
Because I like it better and it costs less for my family.
Because it is healthier and better for me.
I do both.
Cafeteria food is gross.
The food is bad (usually)
It tastes better
It is accommodated to my tastes and it is made by me so I know what goes in it.
It is better food than cafeteria food
because i do
Once again: the food our cafeteria serves is poorly made and tastes bad
I don't
because that is just what I do, but sometimes I wouldn't want the cafeteria food.
Because I have the time to pack my own food
Because I don't like cafeteria food.
I know what is in my lunch, and I am exited to chose my own lunch.
Because I know I like it
It tastes good and fills me up.
I don't
I don't only bring food from home when I do it's because I prefer that over school.
Because I enjoy the food from my home, my parents know what I enjoy, and I enjoy the food from my culture that the caffateria doesn't offer.
i dont i just eat my snack
I don't only bring it from home
My mom doesn't like me eating the cafeteria food because it isn't healthy for you.
the cafeteria food isnt good
The food sucks and is so unhealthy.
i like the food there
I don like cafeteria food
It's conforms to my exact dietary requirements and wishes
Food from home is better than food from the school.
Because it is healthy, I like it, and I control it.
I get to choose my specific meal choice.
i dont boiiii
Because the food in the caffeteria is terrible, and not enough, and where else

Why doesn’t Whitson’s provide snacks for students? For students who don’t have a snack, why can’t the school use fruit from breakfast or lunch?
Stop wasting so much plastic. Stop wrapping the pears in plastic. Stop serving pears. Who eats pears to begin with? Stop insisting the students take things they don't want. Buy metal silverware and wash it each day.

Do you have any suggestions to make the school breakfast...
Less bread and more protein and veggies
Processed meats should never be an option during any meal time and dairy, and red meat consumption should be limited or avoided completely. It is difficult to assess the quality of food and the choices because we are not present. Even though there are healthy options, kids will often choose the unhealthy offerings. I would love if t there were nutrient dense plant based meals offered all week.
The description of food is always very different from the actual food. There’s no point in calling ketchup flavored rice “paella” for example. It’s nice to diversify food, but it doesn’t have to make it complicated.
Different vendor
Make the food more kid friendly. Many kids don’t like lots of sauces with different foods mixed together. It seems like the lunches often are things like chicken with all sorts of mixed vegetables in sauce on top. If my kids don’t like the base of the sauce, then the whole lunch is out the window and we have to send home lunch. It would help if they could get the protein or pasta without sauce if they want.
Need GOOD meatless options daily.
There needs to be more dairy free options for children allergic to milk, and eggs.
The food used to be cooked at school and therefore, was fresher and tastier. Now it is just warmed up from frozen.
Have Whitson's administrators visited schools without warning and ate the food? It's not good. Your philosophy listed below is great, but your implementation of that philosophy is poor. Visit schools without warning and eat the lunches. If they know you are coming, than the food is better.
more healthy vegetarian options
make more meatless option available
Coock hot food at school

If you only bring food from home, why?
Because the school lunch doesn’t taste good And I just throw it away
I like Japanese foods.
My parents say it is cheaper
Because I can choose what I want to eat instead of just having what is on the menu. Also I don’t think that the food is good. At home I can make my own lunch.
I don't like school food.
The food my Mom makes is food that I enjoy a lot.
I used to but now I don't

What suggestions do you have to increase student meal participation? (Fill in the below.):
Go back to the Brookline run system. I miss b good burgers and kale chips. I miss knowing that if I didn’t pick my lunch I could get some healthy, great tasting food at school.
I believe that the meal choices were healthier before Whitson's became the service provider. Our kitchen manager had options like veggie chili, roasted chicken, locally sourced pastas and a variety of soups and salads.
use real potatoes use fresh not frozen cold cuts use rolls that are not so thick serve chocolate milk fresh chicken not frozen
Students shouldn't put recyclable items in trash.
While I understand that food bars/salad bars are a total hassle for staff, people want choice when it comes to food. I would love to see a salad bar or hot food bar offering at school. I typically opt for the tuna sandwich over the other options, yet the tuna is of poor quality. The same salad option every day is also not appealing.
